Hey Everybody, welcome to my Medium Page!

It’s been about 3.5 years since the start of my data science journey back in the fall of 2017. Back then my only interaction with data science was in the form of a random data analysis elective that I took up, hoping for it to be a slightly useful but mostly an easy class to attain a good grade in. Little did I know that I would fall in love with the world of data science and machine learning and the endless possibilities it has to offer. Through all of my projects, assignments in college and professional challenges at work, Medium, Towardsdatascience and Stackoverflow have been the three constant pillars of support that I could rely on to find the answers to my questions. They inspired me to explore new tools and algorithms, helped me find answers when I was stuck and most importantly provided tutorials on intriguing projects completed by other members in the field.

Today, I too like many others in this community have decided to begin my journey as a contributor trying to give back to the platform that has taught me so much. My hope is to give back to the younger versions of myself, those who are starting out or midway through their journeys in the world of machine learning and are hoping to learn and apply their skills to interesting problems. In order to do so, I will be focussing on three broad categories of posts which I hope will provide a solid set of resources for individuals to understand basic concepts, complete end to end projects and stay at up to date on the latest developments in the field. Below are the areas I will focus on.

Tutorials/Projects:

A big part of my learning came from getting my hands dirty and trying/breaking code. A saying that I often think back on when trying to learn a new concept is “The only way you know if you truly understand a concept is if you can apply it or teach it to someone else”. So a large focus of my page will be on posting step-by-step tutorials for readers to complete end-to-end projects.

My first post can be found here! and is focussed on building a restaurant suggestion chatbot using AWS Lex, API Gateway and DynamoDB. This is part of a series called Cloud Computing Applications focussed on the projects I completed in the final semester of my Master’s at Columbia University as part of my cloud computing class. If this sounds too complicated at this point do not worry! I will soon be releasing a beginners series on Natural Language Processing (NLP) and projects for one to get started in the field.

In order to hit the ground running, I will focus my first few posts on the three to four projects that I completed in fall 2020 as part of my final semester at Columbia. These will involve concepts focussed on NLP, Computer Vision, Cloud Computing and others.

Machine Learning (ML) Algorithms and Natural Language Processing (NLP) Core Concepts:

The next area I will focus on will be providing detailed introductions or simplifications of concepts in ML and NLP. These will be focussed on topics like word embeddings, attention mechanisms, functioning of algorithms like Random Forest, XGBoost, Support Vector Machines and mini-projects that leverage these concepts/algorithms.

Research and Latest Developments:

Lastly, as someone who is extremely interested in NLP and Big-Data, I will make regular posts on the latest research and developments in the field, sharing summaries of popular and interesting papers on NLP as well as some of the latest developments/progress being made across the spectrum of data science and machine learning.

So with that being said, here is a big hearty welcome to my page! I hope each one of you finds something on this page that can help you along on your data science journey and I hope I get to learn a little more every single day in the process of making these posts and guiding you.
